What drives the cost of a website redesign
"How much does a website cost?" is the first question on most calls. The honest answer is "it depends", so here is what it depends on, from 40 of our proposals over the last two years.
The short version
We don't sell fixed packages, because no two sites need the same work. Where a project lands depends far more on the number of unique page types and how much thinking has already been done than on the number of pages.
| Factor | Effect on cost | Effect on timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Number of unique page templates | High | High |
| Brand identity as part of the project | High | Adds 2–4 weeks |
| Integrations (CRM, booking, shop) | Medium to high | Medium |
| Content written or produced by us | Medium | Medium |
| Total number of pages | Low | Low |
What pushes the price up
- Unique templates. Fifty blog posts share one template. Ten bespoke landing pages are ten templates.
- Unclear decisions. When the team hasn't agreed who the site is for, we spend budget finding out. That work is valuable, but it is work.
- Integrations. CRMs, booking systems and old databases are where estimates go wrong. Budget a contingency of 15%.
- Content. Writing, photography and video are often left out of the budget and then become the reason launch slips.
Where you can safely save
- Reuse templates. A good component system lets one layout serve many pages.
- Launch with fewer pages and grow. A sharp 8-page site beats a vague 40-page one.
- Bring decisions, not just requirements. A one-page brief signed by the people who'll approve the site can save weeks.
A rule of thumb: budget about 15% of the build cost per year for care, content updates and small improvements. A website you never touch is a website that slowly stops working.
How to get an accurate quote
Send agencies the same short brief: what the site must achieve, who it's for, which pages you think you need, what systems it must connect to, and your budget range. Agencies can't quote well without a budget, and a range is enough.
If you'd like us to look at yours, send us a brief. After a short call, you'll get a written proposal with a clear price within two working days.
